As of Tuesday evening, we are still waiting to
hear from State CBF Coordinators after they have
checked on churches in their states as to how
we can be of assistance. Obviously over the next
few days, many opportunities will be made known
for volunteers and supplies. We will wait to hear
how we, CBF FL DART can help.
FBC Pensacola will become a long-term (2-4 weeks)
emergency shelter for the Red Cross for evacuees
who have nothing to return to. There will be needs
to supplement the volunteers that the church will
provide. Call FBC directly and leave your name,
when you are available and contact information
(850-433-5631). Concerning the number of people
they will be sheltering, the length of time AND
the trauma of everything they own now gone and
they are not allowed to return home, there will
be great needs for emotional support and counseling.
Therefore, I have put out a plea to CBF-endorsed
Chaplains in Florida and through National CBF
office.
At this point, Patrick Mahoney, Wauchula and
I have been asked by David Harding to go to Hattiesburg,
MS where Steve Street, State Coordinator of MS
believes we will be able to set up a Coordination
Center. We will leave Thursday morning. We will
pull our trailer to have some supplies to use
by us or whoever once we get there. We will be
met by Ken Cochran from FBC Columbus, GA who helped
us (FL) organize after Charley. Once we arrive,
we will have a better idea, working with CBF MS,
and also CBF AL and CBF LA where and how you can
help. It is apparent that this will not be a “quick
fix.” You may not be able to go/do anything
this week; but, there will be weeks and maybe
months that help will be needed.
Our main objective in all of this is to be the
presence of Christ in the midst of these changed
lives.
