A
recent Miami News Herald article reported that West
Homestead Elementary School created a chess club as
a way to develop better learning/study habits for the
kids in this low graded school. The game has taught
them to think logically and to be able to focus on their
class assignments.
Three young girls from the school captured the first-place
team trophy at the first Girls Open Chess Tournament
in Chicago, Illinois. Elsie Medrano was one of the three,
and Elsie was one of the kids who learned to play at
Open House Ministries with help from Richard and Lucille
Smith. “When I am older,” says Elsie, ”I
want to be an international chess grandmaster and a
coach, or maybe a teacher.”
