A New Kit for Your Church's History
past articles

On December 1, 2002, the Baptist History and Heritage Society will release a new and long-awaited resource titled A How-to Kit for Your Church's History.

The Baptist History and Heritage Society strongly believes that one of its primary duties is to provide resources and services that support the development of meaningful local-church history programs. In fact, the BH&HS mission statement reads: "Helping Baptists discover, conserve, assess, and share their history." That statement mandates that the BH&HS produce up-to-date materials to help churches carry out the practical ministry of history.

The key item in the kit is a detailed 120-page A How-to Manual for Your Church's History. This manual provides an outstanding nine-chapter collection of suggestions for creating and maintaining a excellent program of history in your church. Chapters focus on the following important tasks:

  • Develop an efficient church history committee
  • Celebrate your church's anniversary
  • Research, write, and publish your church's history
  • Observe Baptist Heritage Sunday in your church
  • Locate and preserve your church's records
  • Display and exhibit your church's history
  • Communicate your church's history
  • Dramatize your church's history
  • Photograph your church's history

In addition to the manual, the kit also contains guidelines for using the kit, a resource catalog of history helps, a list of Baptist history programs and collections, a description of the society's Web site, sample pamphlets, an issue of the society's newsletter, a society membership brochure, a book publishing program flyer, and an order form for Baptist heritage videotapes.

Baptist churches of all kinds will find this kit useful. Whether your church is large or small, urban or rural, black or white, Hispanic or Korean, conservative or moderate, rich or poor, or some mixture of these and/or other elements, it has a history. That history deserves respect and appropriate recognition. This kit can help your church remember its story and tell it creatively and well. Consider ordering copies for your church history committee and for your church media library.

Each kit costs $27.95 (plus shipping). However, all orders postmarked and prepaid by November 30, 2002, will pay only $24.95 (plus shipping) per kit.

You can order the kit by calling 800-966-2278; by faxing 615-371-7939; by e-mailing cdeweese@tnbaptist.org; or by sending a written request to the Baptist History and Heritage Society, P.O. Box 728, Brentwood, TN 37024-0728.
